A new study has found that 30 percent of the world’s population is currently exposed to potentially deadly heat for 20 days per year or more—and like a growing forest fire, climate change is spreading this extreme heat.

Th Iwanter Prize provides an unrestricted $2,000 award to one graduating senior who, through a senior thesis and general academic distinction, demonstrates outstanding humanities-based scholarship of a broad and interdisciplinary nature. This year's winner is Isaiah Stock (B.A.’16, Political Science), with Samuel Gee (B.A.’16, History and Religious Studies) garnering an honorable mention.

Projects both large and small will help the university contribute knowledge and resources across the state, thanks to grants from the Ira and Ineva Reilly Baldwin Wisconsin Idea Endowment. This year, eight grants were awarded as well as 10 mini-grants encouraging innovation and experimentation in small-scale projects.

The College of Letters & Science is proud to announce that three L&S students have earned Dean’s Prizes, an honor awarded annually to outstanding scholars in the senior class.

The 10th annual Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. Award for distinguished writing in American history of enduring public significance, given jointly with the Roosevelt Institute, is presented to William Cronon, the Frederick Jackson Turner and Vilas Research Professor of History, Geography, and Environmental Studies.

Through two directed study projects, history major Tristan Krause has delved into fascinating details of the Roman Empire’s army.

Twelve faculty members have been chosen to receive this year’s Distinguished Teaching Awards, an honor given out since 1953 to recognize the university’s finest educators. Nine of those faculty members teach in the College of Letters & Science.

The Wisconsin Alumni Association recognizes eight alumni under the age of 40 who are leveraging the benefits of their UW education to better their cities, states, nation and the world. Six of these outstanding citizens are L&S alumni.
