Eight L&S faculty members have been chosen to receive this year’s Distinguished Teaching Awards, an honor given out since 1953 to recognize some of the university’s finest educators.

Lopez, a professor of communication arts and the Director of the Asian American Studies Program, is one of 15 faculty honored nationwide for research, dedication and impact.

Dan Cavanagh, director of the School of Music, won The American Prize in the “Composition, 2023, Social Justice related” category for his composition Even if the Last Bullet Hits My Chest.

After graduation, senior Jinwan Park will pursue a master’s degree at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, as a Schwarzman scholar.

As a 2024 Marshall scholar, recent alumnus Nils Peterson will study for his master’s at Kings College London.

This fall, as most Badgers settle into Madison, astrophysics and international studies major Madeline Rutherford, will instead travel to Almaty, Kazakhstan, for a year of advanced Russian language study on the Russian Overseas Flagship Capstone Program, funded in part by the prestigious Boren Scholarship.

The Louise Troxell Award and Edna Kernwood Glicksman Award were created to honor the cause of women on this campus. Informally known as the Troxell-Glicksman Awards, they recognize outstanding junior or senior self-identified female students from across UW–Madison, nominated by faculty or academic staff.

Economics alum Dana M. Peterson MS’02 receives Wisconsin Alumni Association Luminary Award. The Luminary Award, in its inaugural year, recognizes alumni who serve as aspirational examples for others through their accomplishments in the areas of leadership, discovery, progress, and service.

History, Political Science and International Public Affairs alum Farha Tahir ’09, MIPA’10 receives Wisconsin Alumni Association Forward Award. The Forward Award acknowledges rising stars in various fields who exemplify the Wisconsin Idea through an emphasis on service, discovery, and progress.
