Nine hundred students from 26 high schools in Wisconsin gathered on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus April 9 to complete an intensive study of Silent Spring, a 1962 classic of popular science literature that helped launch modern environmentalism later in the decade.

A collaboration between the Religious Studies Program and the School of Journalism and Mass Communication is working to improve media coverage of religion.

Nine University of Wisconsin-Madison professionals — four of them from the College of Letters & Science — have been selected as recipients of the 2018 Academic Staff Excellence Awards. The awards recognize achievements in leadership, public service, research, teaching and overall excellence.

Communication Arts associate professor Eric Hoyt is a leader of Unlocking the Airwaves, a collaborative project that will bring together split archival material from the National Association of Educational Broadcasters and create a resource for scholars, educators and the public.

Thirty-three faculty — twenty-two of them from the College of Letters & Science — representing all four divisions at the University of Wisconsin–Madison have been honored with 2018 faculty fellowships.

The 2018 election in Mexico will have a big impact, not just for Mexico but also for multinational companies that operate in Mexico and north of the border in the US.

One scholar from each of four faculty divisions — Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, Physical Sciences and Biological Sciences — is selected to receive the Hilldale Award. L&S faculty members received three of the four awards.

Twelve faculty members - nine of them from the College of Letters & Science - have been chosen to receive this year’s Distinguished Teaching Awards, an honor given out since 1953 to recognize the university’s finest educators.

Monica Macauley, professor of linguistics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and president of the Board of Directors of the Endangered Language Fund, says this is fundamental change from linguistic practices of the 20th century. “[There] is a real change from the old fashioned idea of working on a language where you’re an outsider... to a much more collaborative situation,” said Macauley. “We’re getting more and more native linguists. We’re getting more and more people who collaborate with linguists on projects. Linguists are not coming in and saying here’s what I’m going to do. They’re coming in and saying is there anything I can I do to help.”
