On September 1, 2009, Howard Veregin was named State Cartographer, replacing Ted Koch who retired in July.

The State Cartographer’s Office (SCO) is a unit within the Department of Geography at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. One of the primary missions of SCO is to gather, maintain and disseminate information about mapping and geospatial activities throughout the state.

Veregin received his PhD from the University of California - Santa Barbara. He was Associate Professor of geography at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities before joining Rand McNally in 2000, where he was Director of Geographic Information Services.

Veregin’s experience includes both theoretical and applied aspects of cartography, geographic information systems (GIS) and geospatial technology. In the role of State Cartographer he will have the opportunity to interact with a diverse array of professionals working to enhance the role of geospatial data and technology in all walks of life.

The SCO also serves an educational function through publications, presentations, seminars, and workshops. SCO staff serve on various state and national geospatial associations, and act as liaisons between the many geospatial agencies and organizations in Wisconsin. SCO also coordinates activities related to the geospatial sciences at UW-Madison.
