The Center for South Asia is offering a workshop for middle and high school teachers in conjunction with "Delight in Design: Indian Silver for the Raj" an exhibit currently on display at the Chazen Museum of Art.
The workshop, "The British in India: Art, Culture and Society", aims to question the impact of the British on the social production of arts and music, as well as their influences in Indian social customs, legal history and mapping of the subcontinent.
Participating educators’ will expand their knowledge of this history and develop learning modules for classroom use that will be shared online as a resource.
The workshop will feature talks by Dr. Robert Frykenberg (emeritus), Dr. James Jaffee (UW-Whitewater), Dr. Julie Codell (Arizona State University), and a gallery talk by Dr. Joan Raducha (emeritus). There will also be a demonstration of metalsmithing and a screening of a film by Satyajit Ray.
The Chazen exhibit highlights a selection of expertly decorated silverware produced by craftsmen from different regions of India during the late British rule.
