Nita Sahai, Associate Professor in Geology and Geophysics and Romnes Faculty Fellow, published a paper in "Langmuir" – the premier journal for surface chemistry – with co-authors Mark Stevens (Geology & Geophysics), Leslie Donato (Biochemistry) and Steven K. Lower (Ohio State University).
The researchers investigated the early response and attachment of immune system cells (T-lymphocytes) to metal oxide mineral phases in the human body, present as biomedical implants or inhaled dust particles. The study found the attachment strength of T-lymphocytes depends on known oxide mineral properties such as surface charge, chemical composition and crystal structure, allowing the researchers to predict early cell response.
