Friedland is a professor in the School of Journalism & Mass Communication, an affiliated professor in the Department of Sociology and the founder and director of the Center for Communication and Democracy. He studies civic and citizen journalism and communication and society, among other topics.
Xenos, whose scholarship includes the effects of new media on political engagement, is an associate professor in the Department of Communication Arts.
