BizTimes covers new school and the growing popularity of computer sciences as an undergraduate major at UW-Madison.

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences announced today (April 18, 2018) that three faculty from the University of Wisconsin-Madison — including John P. Morgridge Professor and E. David Cronon Professor of Computer Sciences Gurindar S. Sohi — were elected to the 2018 class of members.

The Goldwater Scholarship is considered the most prestigious undergraduate scholarship in the natural sciences, mathematics and engineering in America.

Four projects created by computer-science students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison won a total of $12,000 in prizes in the computer science department's NEST competition on April 6.

"I'm excited for two reasons," said organizer Jignesh Patel, professor of computer science. "The first-prize winner, Moonshot Learning, already has made sales - indicating that it's answering a real need in the marketplace. And second, two of the four winners were headed by women, who have been traditionally under-represented in our field."

One scholar from each of four faculty divisions — Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, Physical Sciences and Biological Sciences — is selected to receive the Hilldale Award. L&S faculty members received three of the four awards.

Two University of Wisconsin-Madison graduates with deep technology industry experience are leading a working group charged with assessing options to enhance computing education and research on campus.

“All of the breakthroughs that look like science fiction to us—artificial intelligence, self-driving cars, automated assistants, natural language recognition—are powered by data,” says assistant professor Theo Rekatsinas, who joined the Computer Sciences Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in fall 2017.

Yingyu Liang, a new faculty member in machine learning in the University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Computer Sciences, enjoys bringing his disparate interests together. In his free time, he enjoys hobbies ranging from badminton to classical Chinese poetry. Within computer science, he was drawn to machine learning because it pulls together so many things that fascinate him.
