Across UW’s campus, $45 million and 67 new grants were awarded in COVID-19–related research in 2020. In the best tradition of the Wisconsin Idea, L&S researchers have tackled the issue from multiple angles, adding critical insights to the ways in which the pandemic has affected lives in Wisconsin and beyond.

The project will not only add critical perspectives and missing facts to the historical record, but will also help combat ongoing racism and bias.

Associate professor Armando Ibarra's recent op-ed for the Progressive argues that mainstream media outlets' struggle to explain “Latino” political behaviors and voting patterns in the wake of the 2020 election is nothing new. "They are just as shocked today by the results as they were in 2016, and as they have been every four years since at least 1980," he writes. There's a crucial point that's being overlooked, according to Ibarra: class.
