Students from the University of Wisconsin-Madison's School of Journalism and Mass Communication will be honored in May during the 82nd annual Milwaukee Press Club Awards for Excellence in Wisconsin Journalism.
Students in two sections of Journalism 335: Intermediate Reporting created the UW Election Connection, which extensively covered the 2012 November election. The website placed in two categories: Best Website Design and Online Media: Best Multi Media Feature.
The Curb Magazine staff received a Best Website Design for Curb Online.
Emily Genco received an award for Best Single Feature Story Over 30 inches for "Rising Above: One mother’s journey to transcend poverty." Melissa Grau’s story, "Solidarity Sister: 86-year-old nun champions change in health care," also was honored in the category.
Five students who produced long form video journalism projects as part of a special topics course won in the category of Best Program or Special.
Dena Goldstein and Emily Osborne produced "100 Block Battle," a look at the redevelopment of the 100 block of State St. in Madison and the controversy surrounding the plan. Dan Rose and John Waters produced "Capacity to Care," in which Bhutanese refugees now living in Madison talked about their life-changing experience. Matty Neikrug's "S.P.O.T. (Standing Parapalegic Omni-Directional Transport)" followed five biomedical engineering students who were building a device that would allow a paraplegic surgeon to return to the operating room.
