A UW Journalism and Mass Communication senior has received a leadership award from a professional broadcast group. Kyle Deckelbaum was given the Student Leadership Award by the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association. The
award is based on the student who has most noticeably developed and exercised effective and creative skills in leadership. Criteria include demonstrated instances of motivating others to accomplish a mission, despite challenges or obstacles.
Deckelbaum is the youngest sports director ever for WSUM, and as director more than doubled its staff. He has also worked at WJLA-TV in Washington DC, The Mid –Atlantic Sports network, the Washington Nationals
baseball club and for ESPNU. He is on the Dean’s List at the UW. Faculty Associate Pat Hastings, also of the SJMC,
nominated Deckelbaum. Deckelbaum also received reporting awards from the WBA,
as did journalism students Chris Vosters and Mike Fiammetta.
