Emiko Ohnuki-Tierney, William F. Vilas Professor, was chosen as Fellow of the newly created L'Institut d'Etudes Avancées-Paris (Institute for Advanced Study-Paris) in order to continue her work on “Aesthetic and Warfare in Comparative Perspective."
She began the project as The Distinguished Chair of Modern Culture at the Library of Congress which she served in 2009. Her appointment was made possible made by Dr. James Billington, The Librarian of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.
Ohnuki-Tierney's books include "Kamikaze Diaries: Reflections of Japanese Student Soldiers" (2006); "Kamikaze, Cherry Blossoms, and Nationalisms: The Militarization of Aesthetics in Japanese History" (2002); "Rice as Self: Japanese Identities through Time" (1993); and "The Monkey as Mirror: Symbolic Transformations in Japanese History and Ritual" (1989).
