The Letters & Science Career Initiative aims to spark students' imaginations about their futures, help them chart their career paths and empower them to realize their dreams.
L&S has created two foundational pieces that will support those efforts: an optional second-year career development course and a new residential program based around career exploration. Both will debut in 2015.
The interdisciplinary, one-credit course, which will be offered in the spring 2015 semester, is the cornerstone of the LSCI. Inter-L&S 210 will engage students earlier in their undergraduate careers and will connect liberal arts degrees to academic and career preparation, practical job skills, goal-setting, critical thinking and reflection. While the course will initially enroll 420 students, the aim is to eventually reach thousands of second-year and transfer students.
Professor Greg Downey and teaching assistants, supported by L&S career advisors and alumni mentors, will teach second-year students to leverage the knowledge, skills, and abilities gained from their liberal arts degrees and out-of-class experiences to prepare for the changing world of work.
Meanwhile, the Career Kickstart program will open in Ogg Hall for the 2015-16 school year. The new residential program will create opportunities for students to learn about themselves and their places in the world of work through on-site academic and career advising, career workshops, backstage access to employers and alumni, and more.
