Professor Daniel Grabois

The School of Music is pleased to announce the appointment of Daniel Grabois as assistant professor of horn, beginning with the fall semester of 2011-12.

He will teach the studio of undergraduate and graduate horn majors, perform with the Wisconsin Brass Quintet (WBQ) on campus and in concert tours through the state and coach brass chamber music ensembles. He succeeds Douglas Hill, who retired as professor emeritus of horn and hornist with the WBQ.

Grabois leaves the Manhattan School of Music, where he has been the chair of the department of contemporary performance since 2008, and the Hartt School of Music (University of Hartford), where he has been a master artist teacher since 1999.

Concurrently, he has been a member of the Meridian Arts Ensemble, a brass quintet with percussion, since 1989. MAE is one of the leading new music ensembles in the country and tours both nationally and internationally; it has been honored with more than 50 commissions from contemporary composers.

Grabois is active as a freelance performer with Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Metropolitan and New York City opera orchestras, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and many more, including more than 20 Broadway shows. He has participated in the Marlboro (VT) Music Festival, Mostly Mozart Festival, Bard Music Festival and many others.

He has sought to assist students with many of the non-musical dimensions of launching a career as a professional musician, including preparing resumes, recording compact discs, managing budgets and examining the relationship with audiences.

For his part, Grabois says,“I can’t wait to get started in Madison. I’ve never had the chance to work so closely with either my students or my fellow faculty members, and I look forward to the opportunity to settle in, meet everyone and learn more about the school.”

He plans to perform for the Faculty Concert Series in the spring semester of the coming year (2011-12).

Grabois graduated from Yale University with the B.A. degree “summa cum laude,” receiving music major honors and the Louis Sudler Prize for Excellence in the Arts. He received the M.M. degree from the Manhattan School of Music.
