A team of Madison East High School students will be heading to New York on April 26, 2011 to participate in the national finals of the Euro Challenge Competition.
The competition – supported in Wisconsin by UW-Madison’s European Union Center of Excellence (EUCE) - promotes the study of the European Union, its economy and its currency, the euro.
Now in its 6th year, the Euro Challenge was piloted and has enjoyed considerable success on the east coast, but it is only recently that high school teams from the Midwest have been participating.
Madison East will become the first team from Wisconsin to appear in the national finals, where they will compete at the New York Federal Reserve on April 27 as one of 25 teams representing 14 states.
The team’s success in the regional rounds in Chicago in late March and their upcoming trip to New York has generated considerable interest locally and regionally.The team was interviewed recently by the Wisconsin State Journal, "School Spotlight: East Students head to Euro Challenge" (April 12).
The students were also invited to give their presentation at a K-12 teacher workshop (The Global Marketplace) held at the Pyle Center on April 20, and coordinated by UW-Madison’s Wisconsin International Outreach Consortium (WIOC) in partnership with the Department of Public Instruction.
Participants discussed the team’s presentation within the context of the workshop theme of developing global competency, commenting that the Madison East team stood as a prime example of how international issues can be researched to the very highest standards by high school students.
In July the team will return to Chicago to present at another conference (Common Economic Challenges) organized by the Goethe-Institut in partnership with among others, the French and German Consulates, the Chambers of Commerce for Germany and France, and the Delegation of the European Union to the United States of America.
