L&S Honors Program: A 50 Year Legacy

The L&S Honors Program celebrated its 50th anniversary on November 4-5, 2010.

The L&S Honors program is unique in the country -- it was started as a response to a petition signed by 172 students in 1958.  The students demanded more rigorous course work at UW-Madison.

These founding "parents" of the L&S program were honored as part of the 50th anniversary.

The celebration began on November 4th with a lead talk by John Rowe (BS'67, History) CEO of the Exelon Corporation.  A dinner at Carson Gulley followed.

The following day, alumni from each of the dive decades gave presentations on Science, Arts and Humanities and Public Service. The day ended with talks by current sophomores doing research ranging from stem cells, to T. S. Eliot to the behavioral and physiological effects of alcohol intoxication.

Joyce Bromley (BA' 94, MA '97, History; History of Science) also completed a history of the L&S Honors Program "An Honorable Legacy" which is available through the Honors Program, Parallel Press at Memorial Library or at the University Bookstore.
