Martin Zanni, the Meloche-Bascom Professor of Chemistry, is the recipient of 2009 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. Government to young scientists.
Zanni is not the only UW-Madison professor to win the award -- Dr. Ana P. Martinez in the School of Medicine and Public Health was also named a recipient.
Zanni and Martinez were two of 85 scientists from across the country who were named awardees. President Obama will present the award to recipients at a White House ceremony at a yet to be determined date.
Both Zanni and Martinez were nominated by the National Institutes of Health.
Research in the Zanni group is aimed at exploring molecular structures and dynamics through vibrational motions and couplings.
The PECASE Award "is the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on outstanding scientists and engineers beginning their independent careers."
It is intended to recognize some of the finest scientists and engineers who, while early in their research careers, show exceptional potential for leadership at the frontiers of scientific knowledge during the twenty-first century. The Awards foster innovative and far-reaching developments in science and technology, increase awareness of careers in science and engineering, give recognition to the scientific missions of participating agencies, enhance connections between fundamental research and national goals, and highlight the importance of science and technology for the nation's future.
