L&S alumna Natalie Moore (B.A.'11, International Studies) is featured in a new Peace Corps public service announcement as the winner of an agency photography contest.
Moore, a native of Alexandria, Va., began serving in Burkina Faso, in West Africa, in October 2012 and makes a difference as a community health worker. She will complete her Peace Corps service on Nov. 14. Her first-place photo entitled "Seeing the World Through Their Eyes" is featured third in the PSA.
"On Christmas Day, I was inside a church celebrating the holiday with the local Catholic population when I saw this young Muslim girl looking through the wall of the church," Moore wrote of her photo on the Peace Corps contest website. "Having just arrived in the Muslim-majority village a few days earlier, I was amazed at how peacefully the different religious groups coexist."
The 30-second spot – titled "Defining Moments" – showcases winning photos from the agency’s Volunteer Viewfinder Photo Contest held in August that invited both current and returned volunteers to submit photos of life-defining moments from their Peace Corps service. Photos were judged on creativity, photographic quality, and strength in representing the contest theme.
"Volunteers are the heart of the Peace Corps, and these passionate photos provide a glimpse into their stories and the moments that will forever change them and the communities they serve," Peace Corps Director Carrie Hessler-Radelet said. "As we revitalize our recruitment and outreach, we hope this new message will inspire viewers to learn more about how they can make a difference with the Peace Corps."
