The inaugural University of Wisconsin-Madison Energy Summit will take place Tuesday, Oct. 30 at Monona Terrace, with a prominent L&S alum serving as one of the event’s keynote speakers.
Gregory Jaczko (Ph.D.’99, Physics), the former chairman of the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission, will speak about the future of energy in America. Jaczko, who served as chairman from May 2009 until July, will discuss the challenges associated with energy-generating sources – including traditional and new sources of electricity – in the United States from policy, political and technical perspectives.
Jaczko first joined the NRC as a commissioner in Jan. 2005. He was a champion of safety regulation throughout his tenure and led the agency’s efforts to respond to the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in Japan.
Jaczko’s talk is scheduled for 12:30-1:15 p.m. The Summit begins at 7:30 a.m., with three keynote speakers, breakout sessions and a networking reception.
It will offer a chance for L&S students interested in energy-related fields to expand their professional network. Nationally-recognized experts, industry professionals, state policymakers and faculty members will be available to talk during breaks, question-and-answer sessions and the networking reception. The Wisconsin Bioenergy Initiative has hosted an annual bioenergy summit since 2008. However, this year the WBI partnered with the UW-Madison Energy Institute to expand the scope of the summit, thus giving rise to the first UW-Madison Energy Summit.
