Letters & Science, the magazine of the College of Letters & Science, has won a gold award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, or CASE.
In the organization’s 2019 Pride of District V awards, which were announced on November 22, Letters & Science earned a gold award for Best Specialized or Unit-Level Magazine.
“I’m thrilled to have our magazine recognized for excellence by CASE,”says Mary Ellen Gabriel, communications director for the College and editor of the magazine. “And I am so grateful to work with a team of talented, creative people who appreciate the impact of strategic storytelling.”
Letters & Science magazine is published each fall and spring, with issues sharing news from the college, as well as stories about faculty, alumni, research, programs and the student experience. The first issue was published in fall 2018, with the goal of providing a newsstand-quality publication to “delight and inspire,” as well as remind alumni supporters of the value and importance of the liberal arts in today’s world.
Stories in the first three issues have explored the origins of the universe, earth and humankind; the role of the humanities today; a scholar’s research on genocide; the cultural significance of soccer; how teaching has changed across the college; a center’s work to understand and eradicate poverty; the promise of a new performing arts center; and many other topics that showcase the college’s relevance in our ever-changing world.
The L&S advancement team is led by Assistant Dean for Strategic Communications and Advancement Denise Hickey. Writers Katie Vaughn and Aaron R. Conklin, as well as other campus writers and freelancers, help create content for the publication. Gabriel works with Pittsburgh-based Landesberg Design on layout and design.
Other UW-Madison publications and projects were also honored in the Pride of District V Awards: Badger Insider magazine earned a gold award for Best Cover (Magazine, Tabloid or Brochure) and silver in Excellence in Illustrations. In the Best Electronic Newsletter category, the Wisconsin Alumni Association took gold for The Flamingle, while University Communications got silver for Inside UW. On Wisconsin magazine won a bronze award for Best Cover (Magazine, Tabloid or Brochure), while University Communications earned gold for Best Web Site, Individual Page or Section for its “13 Demands: The Black Student Strike of 1969” project.
All winners will be recognized in an awards luncheon on December 17 in Chicago.
