The Language Institute received a 3-year grant of $554,674 from the U.S. Department of Education to conduct a national study of the alignment of the goals of the U.S. Standards for Foreign Language Learning with the goals and expectations of students of foreign language at the postsecondary level.
The large-scale study, directed by Sally Magnan, professor of French and Director of the Language Institute, is based on a survey of students of 35+ languages at 10 universities across the United States.
Results of the study will inform the design of foreign language programs, the development of foreign language curricula, and the implementation of the National Standards at the postsecondary level and in many less commonly taught languages.
This study aligns with other current research projects in the Language Institute, including a collaborative study of the Language Institute and International Academic Programs to investigate long-term outcomes of study abroad.
