The University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Journalism and Mass Communication was well represented at the annual Wisconsin Broadcasters Association student awards ceremony earlier this month.
In the category of Best Website, the UW Election Connection received first place. The website was a collaborative effort between the J335 Intermediate Reporting classes of faculty associates Pat Hastings and Steve Walters. The project's web designers and editors were Caitlyn Furin, Jade Likely, Muge Niu, who, along with 30-plus students, produced a multimedia website for the November election.
Within that site, Jocelyn Van Beek won first place for Radio News for coverage of social media use in the November election.
Kyle Deckelbaum (BA'12, Journalism) and Parker Gabriel won second place for their Long Form Television documentary, "F.C." The documentary, produced in J475 Special Topics: Long Form Video Journalism, told the story of a softball player diagnosed with thyroid cancer three weeks before she was supposed to come to UW-Madison.
UW-Madison students also won two of the four scholarships awarded at the event. Van Beek and Christopher Vosters each received a $2,000 scholarship for their academics and dedication to the field.
