Curb Magazine, a student-run publication through the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, is released this week to 10,000 women statewide in print and endless more at curbonline.com.
Curb is produced by 20 journalism students each fall. For the 2010 issue, the Curb staff chose to create a magazine targeting the modern, Wisconsin woman in ways that current women's publications do not.
The magazine is filled with exciting, bold and relevant stories featuring people and places all over Wisconsin.
Aiming to raise the discourse for women’s magazines, Curb features topics unlikely to be covered in popular titles such as: a close-up of inclusive education in Wisconsin, profiles of local female rock stars and the exclusive story of a Whitewater family who lost their young son in a drunk driving crash in September.
The vibrant life of Curb Magazine goes beyond the print edition. The online version of Curb, www.curbonline.com, is an essential extension of the magazine, providing readers with in-depth looks at their favorite stories, exclusive video content and additional articles and columns.
This year, Curb also produced an iPad app, which offers an interactive version of the magazine complete with additional photos and videos.
The Curb staff work all semester to build this magazine from scratch, including raising all the funds necessary to cover printing, mailing and operating costs. A partnership with Royle Printing in Sun Prairie helped underwrite part of this year’s printing costs, allowing the class to expand the page length and circulation.
Fundraising efforts also included selling School of Journalism and Mass Communication T-Shirts, currently being sold in Vilas Communication Hall.
