Last summer, he directed “Le nozze di Figaro” for Des Moines Metro Opera, becoming the first guest director in the company’s 38-year history.
On January 8, he served as one of three judges for the Iowa District of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in Ames. During the last two weeks of January, he prepared Opera Iowa’s touring productions of “The Magic Flute” and “Sid the Serpent Who Wanted to Sing” for visits to schools and communities throughout the state. In April, he will cross the river again to direct “Madama Butterfly” for the Dubuque Symphony, whose roster includes both current students and alumni of the School of Music.
Back on campus, Farlow is focusing his attention on University Opera’s spring production of “The Consul” by Gian Carlo Menotti.
As usual, he will be assisted by professional set, costume and lighting designers and the cast of undergraduate and graduate music students will be supported by a full orchestra conducted by James Smith.
Three performances will be staged in mid-April in the beautifully restored Carol Rennebohm Auditorium of Music Hall.
