The College of Letters & Science mourns the untimely death of Department of Anthropology's Honorary Fellow Dr. James M. Skibo on April 14, 2023. Dr. Skibo was a valued member of the college community, where he mentored graduate and undergraduate students and partnered with faculty to better understand Wisconsin’s ancient and more recent history. He was an enthusiastic advocate for the power of archaeology in public outreach. An eminent scholar who made many contributions to the archaeology of the Great Lakes and beyond, he was also the “People’s Archaeologist,” committed to gathering and preserving archaeological evidence in ways that allow us to collectively tell true stories about our past. His colleagues remember him as someone who made everyone around him feel great about their contribution to knowledge. We will miss him sorely.
