As people converge on London for the Olympic Games, we thought it might be fun to reflect on a time when travel across the Pond was much different.
In 2011, thanks to a grant from the Friends of the UW-Madison Libraries, the University Archives acquired a diary entitled “Seeing the British Isles in 1929,” written by F. Chandler Young and his brother Hobart.
F. Chandler Young had a long association with the College of Letters & Science, having graduated from UW-Madison in 1940. He went on to earn his master's degree and Ph.D. and served as an assistant dean and then as an associate dean of Student Academic Affairs of the College from 1947-69. After serving as vice chancellor for Student Affairs from 1969-73, he returned to the College and served as associate dean until retiring in 1983. He died in 2001.
