A Year of the Arts Marquee Event, "Elusive Truths: The Cinema of Errol Morris" celebrates the work and ideas of this great American documentary filmmaker — and alumnus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison's History Department— with a complete retrospective of his documentary films and a sampling of his TV productions, culminating in two lectures by Mr. Morris himself.

- Thursday, October 21st, 4p.m., Cinematheque: A lecture by Professor Carl Plantinga (Calvin College), a UW-Madison graduate, discussing Errol Morris's films.
- Thursday, October 21st, 7:30 p.m., Wisconsin Union Theater: A lecture by Errol Morris, entitled "Elusive Truths: Filmmaking and Politics." This is part of the Wisconsin Union Directorate's Distinguished Lecture Series.
- Friday, October 22nd, 1:30 p.m., Cinematheque: A roundtable discussion with Errol Morris, moderated by Professors Bill Brown (UW-Madison) and David Resha (Birmingham Southern College).
- Friday, October 22nd, 4p.m., MMoCA: The Wisconsin premiere of Morris's new film, Tabloid, introduced by Errol Morris.
Since his filmmaking debut in 1978, Morris has directed eight documentary features, and is currently working on a ninth, Tabloid, which he describes as his first film about love since Gates of Heaven.
His films have won many awards, including:
- Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature
- Emmy
- Grand Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival
- Silver Bear at Berlin International Film Festival
- Golden Horse at the Taiwan International Film Festival
- Edgar from the Mystery Writers of America
His documentaries have repeatedly appeared on many ten best lists and have been honored by the National Society of Film Critics and the National Board of Review.
