Faculty, undergraduate honors in Latin American, Carribbean and Iberian Studies

Latin American, Carribbean and & Iberian Studies would like to announce two faculty award winners and two notable undergraduate achievements.

  • Guido Podesta was recently awarded the 2009 John Leddy Phelan Distinguished Service Award. Podesta is a professor in Spanish & Portuguese and an Associate Dean in Division of International Studies.
  • LACIS Associate Director Alberto Vargas received the University Housing’s Honored Instructors Award and was also elected to the Executive Committee of the Consortium of Latin American Studies Programs (CLASP).
  • Rebecca Sweeney, a LACIS undergraduate, received the Hilldale Undergraduate Research Fellowship under the direction of LACIS Director Ksenija Bilbija. Their project is entitled, “Books to People: A Comparative Study of the Cartonera Publishers in Bolivia”
  • Carly Stingl, a LACIS undergraduate, was accepted at La Universidad Torcuato di Tella in Argentina to begin a graduate degree in journalism (Master en Periodismo). During this program she will work for the newspaper "La Nacion."  Carly was awarded $500 from LACIS for this endeavor and in exchange will compose articles related to living, studying and working in Argentina.  A link to these articles and her blog will be forthcoming on the LACIS website.
