Journalism is in crisis and there is a dire need for new models on how to finance and support good journalism.
That was the theme of a public forum, "The Survival of Good Journalism," on May 28 in New York City, hosted by the new Center for Journalism Ethics at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Leadings journalists, journalism scholars and members of the public debated whether traditional ethical rules still apply in a fast-paced multi-media world where anyone with a laptop can publish news and commentary.
About 130 alumni from the University of Wisconsin jammed a hall at the Harvard Club to ask questions to a panel moderated by Stephen J. A. Ward, director of the Center for Journalism Ethics.
The panel included John Geddes, managing editor of the New York Times, Scott Cohen, senior correspondent for CNBC, Eileen Alt Powell, editor and writer for the Associated Press's International Desk, and Nathan Brackett, deputy managing editor for Rolling Stone magazine.
