Congratulations to Professor Tom DuBois of the Scandinavian Studies Department, who will receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Umeå in Sweden.
The University of Umeå is Sweden's national center for research connected to the Sámi, the country's indigenous population.
DuBois will receive the degree of doctor honoris causa in recognition for his work on Sámi studies and the field of ethnology, as well as his close collaboration with faculty and programs at the University of Umeå.
DuBois has mentored doctoral students working on projects related to folklore and Sámi culture, facilitated the participation of Nordic scholars in North American conferences, and helped mainstream the study of Sámi topics into the field of Scandinavian Studies in the United States.
The ceremony will take place on October 21, 2011 in Sweden.
