The "What is Human?" Conference, October 1-3, brought together world renowned scholars to explore the transformations and genealogies of the human from a multidisciplinary perspective. Speakers included philosopher Ian Hacking, neuroscientist Marco Iacoboni, and Historian Evelyn Fox Keller among many others.
The conference traced two overlapping lines of inquiry: one devoted to biotechnology, bioethics, and biopolitics and the other to neuroscience, neurotechnology, and neuroethics. The “What is Human?” initiative fosters revitalization of intellectual and institutional relationships between the sciences and the humanities.
Aiming to break down what C.P. Snow called a “Two Cultures” division between the humanities and the sciences, WIH creates a new interdisciplinary learning community and public intellectual dynamic.
