Freedom's Teacher written by UW alumna Professor Katherine Mellen Charron.
Katherine Mellen Charron, who received her MA'97 in the Department of Afro-American Studies, has published Freedom's Teacher: The Life of Septima Clark (University of North Carolina Press, 2009).
Charron's book chronicles the life of Septima Poinsette Clark, a civil rights activist who's gift was education. The biography places Clark (1898-1987) in a long tradition of southern African American activist educators, women who spent their lives teaching citizenship by helping people to help themselves.
Charron is now an assistant professor at North Carolina State University. She is also coeditor of William Henry Singleton's Recollections of My Slavery Days.
