Afro-American alumna's new book details role of women in Civil Rights Movement

Danielle McGuire (BA'97, MA'99, Afro-American Studies) is making waves with a provocative new book, "At the Dark End of the Street: Black Women, Rape and Resistance - A New History of the Civil Rights Movement from Rosa Parks to the Rise of Black Power" (Knopf, 2010).

McGuire is a writer and Assistant Professor in the History Department at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Her book places African American women at the center of civil rights history as her narrative probes sexual violence, leadership, and protest.

Since receiving her PhD from Rutgers in 2007, she won numerous teaching and research awards.

Her dissertation on sexualized racial violence and the African American freedom struggle received the 2008 Lerner Scott Prize for best dissertation in women’s history.
