The University of Wisconsin-Madison's African Studies Program will host a round table discussion of the recent political and military upheaval in the West African country of Mali on Tuesday, Feb. 19.
"Urgent Understanding: Crisis in Mali" is free and open to the public, and will begin at 7 p.m. in the Red Gym's first-floor Masley Media Room.
The event's panelists will be: Professor of Geography Matthew Turner, who has worked in central Mali since 1987; Leif Brottem, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Geography who co-wrote an op-ed piece in The New York Times last month (with Professor of Political Science and International Studies Scott Straus); Professor of Agricultural and Applied Economics Jeremy Foltz, who specializes in the economics of developing countries, particularly in Africa; and Thierno Hady Diallo, a research specialist in the Department of Agronomy and a native of Mali.
