The Departments of German and Curriculum & Instruction will host the 22nd Annual German Day on April 7, 2011.
More than 600 students and teachers from over 40 Wisconsin middle and high schools will travel to Memorial Union to compete in contests involving Poetry Reading, Spelling, Music, and Skits, as well as presenting Posters and Videotapes.
German Day which will be judged by faculty, staff and students of German at UW-Madison.
The middle and high school students come from many corners of the state including Madison, Monona, Milwaukee, Sussex, Oconomowoc, Glendale, Menasha, Appleton, Ashwaubenon, Mukwonago, Beaver Dam, Menomonee Falls, Greenfield, Ripon, Kenosha, Portage, Wausau, West Bend, Wisconsin Heights, Sun Prairie, Lomira -- to name a few!
German Day is one of many activities the Department of German hosts in its ongoing commitment to working with schools in their efforts to improve the teaching of German in Wisconsin.
The event has become an annual tradition for UW-Madison and secondary schools in Wisconsin.
This year's event motto is "Hebt das D-A-CH!" which literally means "raise the roof!" This is also a play on words, since the German word for "roof" (“Dach”) is composed of the international abbreviations for Germany (D), Austria (A), and Switzerland (CH) where German is spoken.
