The 2009-2010 academic year is the Year of Humanities at the UW-Madison.
The Year of Humanities’ goal is to raise the profile of the humanities, both on campus and among the general public by presenting to a broader audience what the humanities are and how they enrich our lives through teaching, scholarship, and community engagement.
In keeping with the Wisconsin Idea, the Year of Humanities will bring the resources and talent of the many people and organizations in the humanities at UW–Madison to the broadest possible community. At this point, the Year of Humanities has 18 events – with two Chancellor’s Lectures and 16 department-led projects.
These projects include public talks, conferences & colloquia, library series, films, dance, art discussions, public readings, and rap. Philosophers, filmmakers, historians, poets, art historians, linguists and many other prominent experts will come to Madison to participate in the events.
The Chancellor’s Lectures will showcase two world-renowned humanities scholars: Judith Butler on September 16, 2009—professor in the departments of Rhetoric and Comparative Literature at the University of California, Berkeley; and Elaine Pagels on April 22, 2010—professor of Religion at Princeton University.
