Vadim Gorin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics. He received a double PhD in mathematics from Moscow State University and the University of Utrecht, spent four months at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute at Berkeley and then seven years at Massachusetts Institute of Technology before coming to UW-Madison.

Vadim works in probability theory, especially to understand various models that come from statistical physics, such as models that describe crystals. One of his current interests is a model called "square ice" that has recently been found in experiments on thin layers of water between two layers of graphene. Vadim is a fan of edible mushrooms. The other weekend he drove to Lake Kegonsa State Park to pick honey mushrooms which he subsequently cooked and ate, and is still alive.
