
Simon L. Marshall is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics and received his PhD from Princeton University. He is an analytic number theorist and is interested in properties of arithmetic manifolds, such as their co-homology and how much their eigenfunctions can concentrate.

Simon's mathematical research is connected to the distribution of prime numbers and the frequencies a drum makes when you hit it. Outside of math Simon has been singing barbershop for two years, which is a wonderful way to enjoy live harmony but also feels like being beaten to death with dad jokes. Before that he danced salsa and tango, and played the cello. He also likes to cook and mix cocktails.

Describe your primary research, as well as its significance to your field and, if applicable, current issues and events.
My research lies in an area called Analytic Number Theory. It is connected to the distribution of prime numbers, and the frequencies a drum makes when you hit it. It has connections with cryptography and mathematical physics.
Describe what your research specifically involves (travel, experiments, historical texts, etc.). What’s most exciting and/or challenging about it?
My research involves a lot of sitting, thinking, and sketching out arguments, as well as some time reading textbooks. Once I'm sure I have a result worked out, I write it up carefully in a paper, and sometimes travel to give a talk about it. I also travel to visit collaborators.
What drew you to UW-Madison (i.e. how did you end up on the faculty here?)
I was drawn to UW Madison by the friendly math department, and because I like the city. I like the comfortable scale of Madison, the open space, and how easy it is to bike around, while still having good food and culture.
Describe your teaching style. What kinds of strategies do you use to keep students engaged?
I like to keep students engaged by giving them group exercises in class. I also like to explain the meanings of theorems, or the reasons they are true, so that students can come to understand them in their own way.
What do you like most about teaching and researching at UW-Madison?
I like the feeling of community, and being able to share something helpful or insightful with my students or colleagues.
