Eight members (two from L&S) of the University of Wisconsin–Madison community have been selected by the University Staff Awards Selection Committee to receive the 2017 University Staff Recognition Award.

UW-Madison student Hajjar Baban is one of two finalists for the inaugural position of National Youth Poet Laureate. The title will be bestowed for the first time on April 26 by the literary arts organization Urban Word and leading national poetry organizations.

UW-Madison alumnus Matthew Desmond has won the Pulitzer Prize for his book, “Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City.” It’s the story of eight Milwaukee families faced with losing their homes. It’s also a powerful analysis of a little-known epidemic affecting people across the country living in poverty.

Since 1981, UW–Madison’s Adult Career and Special Student Services office and the Dean of Students have presented the annual awards to people who’ve resumed their academic pursuits after a significant interruption and have attained senior status while handling all the demands of adult life.

18 UW-Madison students - 6 from L&S - have been selected as recipients of the nationally competitive NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP). The fellowship program, which provides three years of financial support for graduate study, aims to keep the nation a global leader in advancing science and engineering research and innovation, according to the NSF.

Eight members of the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s academic staff — including Mo Fayyaz in the Department of Botany — have been selected as recipients of the 2017 Academic Staff Excellence Awards.

Announcing the 2017 recipients of the L&S Advising Awards, L&S Academic Staff Early-Career, Mid-Career and Judith Craig Distinguished Service Awards, and University Staff Awards.

This year’s recipients of the Hilldale Award, an honor bestowed annually by the Secretary of the Faculty, are Henry Drewal, Kenneth Raffa, John Valley and David Weimer. Winners are recognized for their distinguished contributions to teaching, research and service.

Three University of Wisconsin–Madison students will receive the esteemed Barry Goldwater Scholarship for undergraduate excellence in the sciences. The honor is considered the most prestigious undergraduate scholarship in the natural sciences, mathematics and engineering in America.
