The University of Wisconsin–Madison is pleased to announce that 18 students have been selected to receive grants through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program for the 2018–2019 academic year from the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

Extraordinary members of the University of Wisconsin–Madison faculty have been honored during the last year with awards supported by the estate of professor, U.S. senator and UW Regent William F. Vilas (1840-1908).

Jessica L. P. Weeks, an expert on comparative foreign policy, the causes of war and international security, is the 2018 winner of the Karl Deutsch Award. The prestigious award from the International Studies Association recognizes the scholar under the age of 40 who has made the most significant contribution, through a body of publications, to the study of international relations and peace research.

Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest honor society that is open to students across disciplines. It recognizes the achievements of the most outstanding students in every school and college at UW–Madison.

Phi Beta Kappa is the nation’s oldest academic society honoring the liberal arts and sciences. Founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary, ΦΒΚ stands for freedom of inquiry and expression, disciplinary rigor, breadth of intellectual perspective, the cultivation of skills of deliberation and ethical reflection, the pursuit of wisdom, and the application of the fruits of scholarship and research in practical life.

Ronald Radano, a professor of African Cultural Studies and Music, has been named a 2018-19 Berlin Prize Fellow, the American Academy in Berlin announced. The professor will analyze colonial-era African recordings in Berlin’s Ethnographic Museum.

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences announced today (April 18, 2018) that three faculty from the University of Wisconsin-Madison — including John P. Morgridge Professor and E. David Cronon Professor of Computer Sciences Gurindar S. Sohi — were elected to the 2018 class of members.

HaoYang (Carl) Jiang has made astounding progress toward “The American Dream.” His journey, though, has been arduous. An immigrant from China at age 5, Jiang found himself alone and homeless as an adolescent. Public education and the support of friends and teachers saved him, he says, putting him on a path that led to the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in political science and philosophy.

The Goldwater Scholarship is considered the most prestigious undergraduate scholarship in the natural sciences, mathematics and engineering in America.
